Goin' Fishin'

Port Albert Ontario

Fishing in the Nine Mile is legendary.

So many spring and fall guests at Avoca Ridge are excited to spend their fishing vacation here. Their favourite family memories are anchored to Port Albert, the Nine Mile River and Lake Huron. Grandsons and grandfathers, fathers and daughters, brothers and sisters, lovers and friends all making memories over a clear thin piece of line reflecting the sunrise or sunset, with the pull of a salmon, trout or bass.

The Baskets

The ‘Baskets’ are part of the 250 ft of Nine Mile River bank at Avoca Ridge South and North Cottages in Port Albert and is the most sought after spot on the river. In prime season, people start arriving before daybreak to stake their claim. Rain or shine, sleet or snow, you’ll find fishermen (and fisherwomen) standing up to their eyeballs (waist) in water – waiting. You can hear whoops and hollers throughout the day as the fish are reeled in.

Walleye in the Nine Mile River!

My fella was surprised to catch one of the biggest Walleye he’s seen, right here in our backyard. Fishing from the bank below Avoca Ridge South with a quick cast before getting to work he landed this beauty.

Chinook Salmon Fishing

You can fish at the mouth, the edge of the lake or wade down the river and catch Chinook. This salmon was caught from the bank in September. We have folks return every fall to stay at Avoca South. They leave their fish count on the chalkboard. One fisherman caught 22 in their week long stay!

Mark Twain caught a Steelhead

Yes – it looks like Mark Twain was here fishing for Steelhead and he caught a good one. This was during the fall run. If you go further up river closer to the headwater you can also catch speckled and brown trout in the deep cool pools. It’s best in spring but you can still find them all summer long and in the fall.

The Nine Mile Steelheaders

Every year a group of volunteers from the Nine Mile Steelheaders do a fish count and catalogue at the Port Albert Fishway. It’s fascinating to see just how many fish are in the river for spring spawning.

Fish at the mouth

You can fish at the mouth, the edge of the lake or wade down the river.
